Today's home story comes from a home packed full of bright colours, bold patterns, wild wallpapers and one which is the very definition of eclectic taste.
Pop the kettle on and lets take a peek into the home of @the_boys_at_13 aka Ewan and Joe, who share their home with three dogs: Dylan, Merlin and Monty and two Crested Gecko’s, Coco and Chanel.
How long have you lived here and what type of property is it?
Ewan has lived in the house all his life so for 30 years with Joe moving into the property just under two years ago now. It is a 4 bed detached house which was built in the 70’s.
Did you fall in love with your home instantly? What was the one feature that sealed the deal for you?
Ewan had no choice in living here, but the house is well and truly a home for us. We rent the property off my parents after they decided to buy and move abroad to Hungary. The property is perfectly located for work, and within 30 seconds can be in countryside for the dogs which is just brilliant.
Had you mentally redecorated before moving in or did your scheme come together over a period of time?
When Ewan’s parents moved out the whole place got a revamp as they had fallen out of love with the property…the first thing to go was the dado rail in the living room which separated two different wallpaper designs, it was very 90’s/00’s. When Joe moved in we started work on creating a home we were both comfortable and happy in.
Where do you seek your inspiration?
It may sound corny but inspiration for us comes from everywhere; nature, books, magazines, bars, restaurants, theme parks just everything, however, Instagram has been a great place to pull all those ideas together and find creative and like-minded people.
What was the first job in your home you tackled?
Living room, definitely the living room. Like we have eluded to already the décor was out dated and just needed an uplift. The dado rail got ripped off, carpet pulled up and wallpaper removed.
Were there any surprises during the revamp/renovation?
Since we have been doing work around the house which has mainly been cosmetic work, we have found that a lot of the walls are wonky which is a pain when it comes to wallpapering.
What do you think has been the most successful area of your interior?
We would have to say our living room, it really represents who we are and shows our personalities. We love the variety of colour in the room, the gallery walls that we have created and items we have collected over the years.
Are there any failures in your design/DIY that you care to admit to?
Blimey we could write a book on this, It’s safe to say Ewan is the failure when it comes to DIY, he is prone to injuries (papercut getting a lightbulb out of its box about sums it up). But in all fairness, I think we all have failures when it comes to design/DIY, its how we learn and get to know who we are and what our style is.
Which is your favourite room?
Now that’s a tough one. Gallery walls we love massively, so would have to be either our Living Room, or hall stairs and landing.
Do you have a favourite object in your home?
It’s a tiny object, but Ewan’s favourite object is an old brass elephant nutcracker which belonged to his Grandma. Actually has it tattooed on his arm as well.
Any golden nuggets of advice to share to anyone undertaking their own revamp/renovation, did you learn any lessons?
Just listen to your heart and gut, if you like it that’s the most important thing.
Do you have anywhere in your home that doesn’t make it onto Instagram?
Yeah we do, Kitchen, Bathroom, utility room and one of the bedrooms. Its because we haven’t revamped them yet.
What’s the next project you have planned?
The bedroom and we can’t wait to get started on it.
Thank you to Ewan & Joe for sharing the story of your home with us. I absolutely love how bold the boys have been with their mix of wallpapers, colours and all the facinating little objects they have styled their home with.
Looking forward to seeing how the rest of the house develops. If you want to follow the story of Ewan & Joe's home you can find them on Instagram at @the_boys_at_13
