Welcome back to the latest edition of our interiors inspiration series, A Story of Home. This weeks inspiring Instagram home story comes from Damon aka @townhousefiftyseven. Damon has a beautiful home, a real eye for styling and gives us a tour of his pad showing us plenty of ideas for adding character to a new build property.
Pop the kettle on and kick back for ten minutes and take the tour.
My name is Damon I’m a 37 year old hairdresser living in South Wales, I live with my Yorkshire terrier Charlie
How long have you lived here and what type of property is it?
I’ve been living in my home now for just over 5 years. The house is a new build semi detached townhouse and was 5 years old when I bought it.
Did you fall in love with your home instantly? What was the one feature that sealed the deal for you?
Before I bought this house I was living in a new build modern flat and had outgrown it. My style had changed to, I was craving a more traditional style. This was reflected in the properties I was viewing. I loved the idea of a stone fronted traditional property with original features. Unfortunately all these properties came with a price tag and after years of searching I decided to broaden my search both area and property type. New builds weren’t something I initially wasn’t interested in.
When I viewed this house, it was not love at first sight. It’s only when I went away and thought about it, I started to see the positives. The second viewing I saw it in a completely different light. The one thing which sealed the deal was my bedroom, I loved the size and the fact it was on its own floor. Before I knew it I was putting in an offer which was excepted. From years of saving and viewing multiple properties the moment had finally come I was buying my own house.
The months that followed I spend hours planning how I was going to decorate creating Pinterest pages and collecting magazines. The funny thing is I ended up completely doing the opposite when I moved in. I felt so different when I was actually in the space.
The whole house was magnolia and the rooms felt very bland. I wanted it to feel lighter and the first thing I did before deciding on any colours was paint the whole house white. It felt like a different house instantly. Over the years to follow I added lots of features to add character, as I still loved a traditional style. Adding fireplaces in the lounge and bedroom. Adding brick walls under the stairs and behind the fire in the bedroom. Adding panelling throughout the house, really helped change the whole feel. It started feeling like home.
Which is your favourite room
My favourite room is my bedroom I love how cosy it is. In the winter it’s so nice to put the fire on and cosy up with a cup of tea.
It started feeling like home. The positive of it be a new build was I surprised to easy it was to add these features.
Are there any failures in your design/DIY that you care to admit to?
The only one regret I have is not waiting longer to do the bathroom. I didn’t think long term when I chose the tiles. I wish I’d chosen white tiles as I do feel a bit restricted to what colours I can add to it, also I couldn’t afford to change the bathroom suite. I probably would do it completely different if I was to do it now. On a positive is a lovely and bright space and I managed to do it on a shoe string.
What do you think has been the most successful area of your home/interior?
I absolutely love the new traditional feel to the house and also the transformation of the garden. The garden was a bog and wasn’t an enjoyable space, I now spend my life in the garden, such a fab place to relax and unwind and also to entertain with friends and family. I can’t tell you how pleased I am with this.
Do you have a favourite object in your home?
One of my favourite things I’ve added to my home is the radiator in the hallway it’s definitely transformed the feel and it’s the first things you see when you come through the front door.
Do you have anywhere in your home that doesn’t make it onto Instagram?
The only place in my home which doesn’t appear on Instagram is my downstairs cloak room, I still haven’t put my stamp fully on that.
What’s the next project you have planned?
My kitchen is also a room I’d love dearly to change. I’ve done a mini revamp on a strict budget. I had doors given to me and again I changed the tiles, which I’m so pleased with for now but would love to change it for my dream kitchen, I just need to save my pennies. Definitely a future project down the line. I can’t tell you the enjoyment I’ve had over the last 5 years, I’ve loved the planning I found it so exciting. I’ve loved every second of making my house a home.
Thank you Damon for sharing you home with us, and of course Charlie - couldn't resist this adorable image of him.
What I love about Damon's home is how much personality and character he has added to his new build. With a palette of white, grey & navy he has created a really elegant home with layers of texture and all that panelling has me running to the timber yard.
