Hello, we are back from a little break with our latest in the series of home stories from our favourite inspiring Instagram homes.
This week we have the pleasure of sharing a Peak District neighbour and beautiful home in the heart of rural Deryshire. Our home story comes from the lovely Joolz aka @catwalktocowpat and as the name suggests she swapped a life of high fashion for farm life where she has spent the last 20 years creating a stunning home filled with beautiful styling. So grab a cuppa, pop your virtual wellies on and lets head off to the farm...
I’m Joolz and I live with my hubby Tim, affectionately called ‘his nibs’ and our 18 year old son and three dogs. We have two girls who have flown the nest and deserted the glorious Derbyshire countryside for the dazzling city lights of Leeds!
How long have you lived here and what type of property is it?
It’s an old farmhouse built in the 1800’s although we have deeds to say there has been a property on this site since the 1600’s. It is actually a working farm that has been in 3 family generations so it is very much a working farmhouse as well as our home
Did you fall in love with your home instantly? What was the one feature that sealed the deal for you?
Absolutely did not fall in love with the property. I fell in love with my hubby and the farm came with him! We originally converted a barn on the farm but due to his parents’ failing health we swapped over and had to start again after spending every last penny we had on the barn! It’s taken 20 years to get the house to the same décor and comfort level as the barn as it is three times the size and we raised a family in between!
Had you mentally redecorated before moving in or did your scheme come together over a period of time?
It was extremely out of date with no heating, old electrical system, leaky roof …so we couldn’t do anything until we had tackled the necessities! We had just started a family too so for the first five years we lived in semi reno chaos!
Where do you seek your inspiration?
I collected house magazines for as long as I remember and having worked in fashion I applied a similar approach and used to create mood boards for each room as we went along.
What was the first job in your home you tackled?
We installed central heating! Replaced windows and tore out the shadow pile carpets!
Were there any surprises during the revamp/renovation?
There has been lots of surprises but the biggest ones were uncovering the 70’s crazy paving fire places to find the original Derbyshire gritstone fire places had been butchered! We were devastated
What do you think has been the most successful area of your interior?
We decided to open plan the majority of the downstairs fairly early on to let much more light into the house. Its very dark by nature as it is set into a West facing hill. Adding on the dining room which was a warren of dark lean -to’s and outhouses into a space which we can actually enjoy the valley views…and add the outdoor room! We pretty much use it all year round.
Are there any failures in your design/DIY that you care to admit to?
Oh lots! We built a huge conservatory onto the front so we could enjoy a light filled room…but its too big…gets too hot and too cold and we cannot really integrate it into the house. I’d love to have it as a used and loved space like @daniellellp
Which is your favourite room?
My favourite room is my dining room which leads to the outdoor room as we get gorgeous light in here and can see the views!
Do you have a favourite object in your home?
My favourite object is my Alexander and James chesterfield sofa
Any golden nuggets of advice to share to anyone undertaking their own revamp/renovation, did you learn any lessons?
Biggest thing is to use your house first and learn what you would actually like to get from each space. It has taken us 20 years to get to where we are now and I finally feel I’ve fallen in love with the beast I inherited!
Do you have anywhere in your home that doesn’t make it onto Instagram?
My utility room or “back kitchen” is never to be seen! My landing and hall/stairs is currently undergoing a facelift and will debut in a while!
What’s the next project you have planned?
After the stairs and hall my en suite which is looking very old and tired and leaks!
Thank you Joolz for sharing your gorgeous home with us. I love how Joolz has created such a cozy home filled with layers & texture, her styling is beautiful - that festive table setting is right up my green & grey street - and lets face it that outdoor room is a thing of dreams, I could just move in there (although I think Joolz might notice!) We will back next week with more home stories from Instaland.
Bye for now
